The Outer Gods
These beings embody cosmic powers—chaotic, indifferent, and often beyond space and time.
- Azathoth: The "blind idiot god", center of the universe. Embodies primordial chaos.
- Darkness (K'n-yan): Cosmic being of absolute darkness.
- Nyarlathotep: The "Crawling Terror", messenger of the gods, takes on countless forms.
- Shub-Niggurath: The "Black Goat with a Thousand Young", a fertile brood god.
- The Nameless Mist: Primal mist—parent of Yog-Sothoth.
- The Unnamed Darkness: Mysterious entity associated with Azathoth.
- Tulzscha: Flame being, sometimes companion of Nyarlathotep.
- Ubbo-Sathla: Primordial, amorphous being—source of all life.
- Yog-Sothoth: Omniscient god, exists everywhere in the space-time continuum simultaneously.
The Great Old Ones
Powerful, often sleeping beings, usually bound on or near the earth.
- Abhoth: Source of all the deformed, lives in a pool full of the unformed.
- Atlach-Nacha: Giant spider underground, weaving a web between worlds.
- Bokrug: God of the peoples of Ib – destroyed Sarnath.
- Chaugnar Faugn: Elephant-like creature, sucks blood with its trunk.
- Cthulhu: The most famous – sleeping god beneath the sea in R'lyeh.
- Cynothoglys: "The Hungering Darkness", female being.
- Dagon: Fish god, servant or aspect of Cthulhu.
- Eihort: A slimy creature that infects beings with "seeds".
- Ghatanothoa: Turns all that sees it into eternal, living petrification.
- Hydra: Partner of Dagon, also connected to the Deep Ones.
- Nug & Yeb: Children of Shub-Niggurath, parents of Cthulhu.
- Rhan-Tegoth: Sleeps in arctic ice, particularly cruel.
- Shudde M'ell: Subterranean being, connected to the Chthonic race.
- Tsathoggua: A frog or toad god, sleeps in the depths of the earth.
- Yig: Serpent Father, associated with American prehistory and myth.
- Zoth-Ommog, Ythogtha, Cthylla: Children of Cthulhu.
Elder Gods
A controversial category—sometimes portrayed as antagonists of the Great Old Ones (particularly by August Derleth). They rarely appear in Lovecraft's original works.
- Hypnos: God of sleep, appears in "Hypnos".
- Kthanid: "Brother" of Cthulhu, invented by Brian Lumley. Symbol of order.
- Nodens: God of the hunt, sometimes helpful to humans.
- Orryx: Mysterious, little-described god.
- Ultharathotep: Light-form, supposedly antagonist of Nyarlathotep.
Other Mythical Beings / Demigods / Regional Deities
- Ghroth: "The Wandering Star" – causes madness upon approach.
- Ithaqua: The "Wendigo", traverses blizzards – freezes victims.
- Lloigor: Energetic beings, live in ley lines.
- Mnomquah: God of the moon beasts.
- Rlim Shaikorth: Living Glacier – "White Worm of the North".
- Thasaidon: Demon lord of magic, often in Clark Ashton Smith's Zothique cycle.
- The Black Pharaoh: Egyptian incarnation of Nyarlathotep.
- The King in Yellow (Hastur): Mythical figure, vaguely associated with madness and Carcosa.
- The Yellow Sign: Symbol that brings madness – usually associated with Hastur.
- Tulzcha: Green flame spirit.
- Y'golonac: God of perverted lust, appears with his mouth in his hands.
- Zhar & Lloigor: Twin gods in the Blue Mountains.
